AMEC Consortium Awarded National Grid Contract
A consortium comprising AMEC, Babcock International and Mott MacDonald, has been awarded a five-year, £500m (AMEC's share: £237.5 million) contract to form an integrated Alliance with National Grid for the upgrade of overhead power lines and underground cables across the western half of England and all of Wales.
This follows the announcement in October 2006 of the consortium's appointment as preferred partner for the work.
It is one of six Alliance contracts to be awarded this week by National Grid. Worth a total of £2.5 billion over five years, the Alliance contracts represent a significant part of the company's investment in the electricity transmission network.
The consortium's work will enable new infrastructure such as wind farms and other electricity generation plant to be connected to the grid and will cover enhancement and replacement of existing assets to ensure the continuing safe and reliable operation of the high-voltage electricity network.
"Helping the energy sector to deliver secure and efficient supplies is a major part of AMEC's strategy and vitally important to the future well-being of the UK," said Samir Brikho, AMEC's chief executive. "We are pleased to continue our long-standing relationship with National Grid and to work with our partners to carry out, in a safe and sustainable way, this major programme of upgrades and renewal of the power network."
