Mott MacDonald Wins Wastewater Treatment Contract In Bulgaria
Mott MacDonald has been awarded a contract to act as technical advisors by the Bulgarian government to develop a 18 million EIB-funded new wastewater treatment plant and related sewerage infrastructure in Haskovo, Bulgaria.
Mott MacDonald is providing technical assistance in reviewing and approving the contractor's design. Mott MacDonald commented that the contracting work will be carried out in Bulgaria, and was contracted in Bulgaria under FIDIC Yellow Book. The consultant will also be administrating and supervising the works contract and providing technical and supervisory support during the operation period of the wastewater treatment project.
Haskovo, with a population of approximately 80,000 is located in south-central Bulgaria on one of the Maritza River tributaries. It does not have a functioning wastewater treatment plant and wastewater is discharged into the Haskovska River untreated.
The overall aim of the project is to reduce the pollution load of the Maritza River and its tributaries and ultimately improve the water quality of the Aegean Sea, contributing towards a better environment and reduced public health risk. The project will achieve, as a minimum, an effluent standard in compliance with EC Directive 91/271/ EEC and also result in the treatment and disposal of sludge in compliance with the relevant EC directives.
Construction of the project will be completed by end 2006.
