Total to Streamline North Sea Operations

Total LogogTotal expects to finalise details of the planned streamlining of its offshore operations in the North Sea within the next four weeks. The French headquartered company announced in January that it was cutting about 90 jobs out of 525 in Aberdeen, with staff ranging up to senior management leaving over a three to six-month period.

Proposals outlined earlier this year mean just one or two contractors will work on all its North Sea platforms, affecting current main contractors including Aker Kvaerner, Fluor, KBR Production Services, and Wood Group.

Formal consultations with offshore workers began in February and have now ended, but a spokesman said a general service operations contract covering all platforms was still in the process of being tendered. A company spokesman stated discussions with potential contractors were ongoing and they may select either one or two and plan to make contract awards in early June.

It is expected that offshore contracting staff will move to the one or two contractors selected by Total under the TUPE (Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) Regulations 1981) regulations, as may some of Total's own 100-strong offshore workforce. Alternatively they will have the option of voluntary severance.
