Mott MacDonald wins Arabian Power Company Work
Mott MacDonald has been appointed owner's engineer by Arabian Power Company - 60% owned by ADWEA and 40% by a consortium led by International Power and including Tokyo Electric Power Company and Mitsui - for development of the new Umm Al Nar combined cycle gas-fired power and water plant located near to the city of Abu Dhabi. The £500 million plant, which will have an installed capacity of 1550 MW and 113 600 m3/day (25 migd) of desalinated water, will help meet the increasing power and water demand in the region and replace an existing 805 MW plant due to be decommissioned in 2008.
The plant comprises five GE9FA gas turbines with supplementary fired heat recovery boilers, two steam turbines, two new multi-stage flash distillers plus a 400/132 kV substation. Seven of the newest of the distillers installed at the adjacent 805 MW plant will be retained to give a total water capacity of 430 000 m3/day (95 migd).
Mott MacDonald's role as owner's engineer will run for the three year design and construction period and will comprise design review and supervising construction, inspection, testing and commissioning. The consultant will also be required to remain on site up to the end of the warranty period and monitor the transfer of the plant to the operation and maintenance company.
Construction by EPC contractor Mitsui - with Toshiba and Hitachi Zosen as principal sub-contractors for the power and water plant respectively - will commence towards the end of this year with commercial operation expected by mid 2006.
