Transco embarks on £15 billion mains replacement work

Gas transportation company Transco has awarded it's mains replacement contract to the Wiltshire based Avent Engineering.

The multi-million pound contract will see Avent's engineers working on behalf of Transco across Devon and Somerset as well as in the Swindon and Trowbridge area of Wiltshire.

The essential safety work is part of a national £15 billion programme by Transco and agreed with the Health and Safety Executive to replace old metal pipes within 30 metres of building with highly durable, non-corroding plastic equivalents. In all, in the region of 90,000km of metal pipe is being replaced throughout England, Scotland and Wales during the 30-year programme.

The new polyethylene pipes have a lifespan of more than 80 years.
