Apache conducts North Sea Drugs Tests

More than 300 North Sea offshore workers are to be drug tested after the discovery of a package containing amphetamines. The amphetamines were intercepted by Apache corporation mailroom staff as they travelled to a worker in the Forties field.

Apache, who bought the oilfield from BP earlier this year, said it had been notified by police about the contents of the package and says the testing is essential to ensure the quality of offshore safety. No warning of the testing was given to workers. As yet, no results from the tests have been released to the media.

Apache paid BP approximately $630 million for the Forties field, which had on the 1st January 2003, estimated proved reserves of 147.6 million barrels of oil equivalent and anticipated 2003 net production of 45,000 barrels of oil per day.
