Foster Wheeler awarded Takeda Contract

Foster Wheeler in association with Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (IHI), has been awarded an engineering, procurement and construction contract for a new active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) plant in Ireland.

The contract, is believed to have a capital cost of around Euros 80 million (approximately $82 million).

The facility will be built at South Dublin County Council's prestigious business park at Grange Castle, Republic of Ireland, on behalf of Takeda Chemical Industries, Ltd., Japan's largest pharmaceutical company.

The new plant will produce the active ingredients for drugs to be used in clinical trials, as well as ACTOS(R), the brand name for pioglitazone hydrochloride, which is used to treat diabetes and is currently being processed by Takeda at its pharmaceutical finishing plant in Bray, County Wicklow.

The contract will involve the design and construction of a new facility on a 20-acre greenfield site. This will be Takeda's first overseas API plant, and it will contribute to product supply, process research and cost-competitiveness. The production of this API facility will complement the activities of Takeda's finishing facility at Bray.
