AMEC Receives Approval for Skye Wind Farm
Proposals put forward by AMEC for a 27-turbine wind farm were granted planning permission by the Highland Council following extensive public and specialist consultation. This wind farm, which has been in development since 1995, is expected to have a capacity in excess of 47 MW, producing enough clean renewable energy to meet the needs of over 68,500 people.
Installation of the £30million development is expected to start during 2003 with the wind farm likely to be fully operational in 2004.
The proposed wind farm will be located on land owned by a consortium of landowners and crofters and will see the establishment of a community fund directly benefiting the local community.
It is hoped that the project will make a significant contribution to the Scottish Executive's commitment to raise the overall proportion of electricity generated from renewable sources in Scotland to 18 per cent by 2010.
