COGAP wins LNG Study
Costain Oil, Gas and Process (COGAP) has been awarded a study into the permitting requirements of a commercial FSRU (Floating Storage and Regasification Unit) for offshore LNG applications.
Contractors Unlimited were not advised of the client, nor the contract value.
The object of the study is to determine the technical, economic, safety and environmental aspects of offshore LNG that will form the basis of a generic specification for a commercial scale FSRU based LNG scheme.
Offshore processing of oil and natural gas using FPSO (Floating Production and Storage Offloading) vessels is a well-established technology. The FPSO technology has several environmental and economic advantages that have led to a growing interest in its application to offshore LNG using FSRU. A FSRU can be moored offshore a major gas consumer, such as the United States, and supply LNG or natural gas directly vaporised offshore. A key economic benefit of a FSRU is that it allows natural gas consumers to import LNG without the need for building onshore import terminals with expensive LNG storage and regasification facilities that are often associated with prolonged public enquiries and potential delays.
