Mott Mac wins National Grid Project
Mott MacDonald has been awarded a contract by National Grid to provide technical support for the installation of integrated control and protection technology at 27 substations throughout the Midlands and south of England. The project is part of a multi-million pound investment programme which will see the majority of substation control and protection equipment replaced over the next five to six years.
The integrated systems combine all the functions of the separate PLC, RTU, metering, control, protection, auxiliary relays, tripping relays and timers currently in use in all National Grid substations. The integrated approach means application specific system solutions can be programmed into the controller. Multiple communication facilities provide a gateway for supervisor and local interfaces and will allow interrogation of legacy and third party systems such as intelligent electronic devices. The modular construction enables the units to be built, assembled and full functional testing carried out at the factory saving both time and money.
Mott MacDonald's role involves providing technical support to National Grid and monitoring suppliers' designs from concept through the manufacturing process and including configuration and testing. The consultant will also undertake a technical audit of the supplier's commissioning and installation programme and works.
The first sites will be operational by 2003 with the full programme completed by the end of 2006.
