Mott MacDonald win Kuwait Project
Mott MacDonald has been appointed by the Kuwaiti Government's Public Authority for Industry (PAI) to design a new seawater pumping plant and renovate an existing plant in the Shuaiba Industrial Area. The project will help meet the rising demand for cooling water in the rapidly expanding industrial area and ensure a reliable supply throughout the year, especially during the summer months.
The contract value is believed to be in the order of £75 million.
The Shuaiba Industrial Area is located 50 km to the south of Kuwait City and covers nearly 2500 ha. With recent industrial expansion there is now a need for further cooling water. The two existing plants ('B' and 'C') which currently serve the area were built in 1971 and 1977 respectively. Plant C requires replacement of its seven pumps as well as greater standby capacity.
The project comprises replacing Plant C's seven nos. pumps with higher capacity pumps, cleaning the intakes to Plants B and C and developing a new 240 000m3/hr seawater transfer system. The new system will include a long sea intake, a pumping station and 3 km pumped delivery main and gravity return culvert as well as a chlorination facility for anti-fouling and standby power generation. An administration building including a payer room and other associated buildings will also be constructed.
Mott MacDonald's role includes undertaking site and topographical surveys, establishing benchmarks and carrying out feasibility studies for both the refurbishment and the new build as well as preparing tender documents. The consultant is also undertaking civil, mechanical, electrical and chemical design for the new plant plus mechanical and electrical design for the renovation of Plant C. Technical assistance to PAI during the tender process and construction supervision are additional responsibilities.
