Helicopter Incident Results in North Sea Tragedy

The Bond Super Puma helicopter which crashed 40 miles east of Aberdeen has claimed the lives of all 16 people on board. Whilst eight bodies have been recovered from the crash area, the remaining eight on board are yet to be found.

It appears that the helicopter which was returning from the BP operated Miller platform suffered a catastrophic failure which led to the helicopter hitting the water at a time when conditions were said to be calm and sunny. It is understood a Mayday message was issued from the helicopter before it hit the water.

Bond Helicopters have suspended all passenger flights using Super Pumas.

Eight of those on board came from north east Scotland, with the others from Angus, Dundee, Dumfries, Cumbernauld, Liverpool, Norwich, the West Midlands, and Latvia.

Ten of the victims worked for KCA Deutag, one for Production Services Network (PSN), one for Sparrows Offshore Services, one for Weatherford UK, one for Expro North Sea Ltd, as well as the pilot and co-pilot with Bond.

Six weeks ago a helicopter with 18 people on board ditched in the Etap field 125 miles east of Aberdeen. All on board were rescued successfully.
