AMEC to Support Key Contract in Korea

AMEC logoAMEC has positioned itself for future environmental work in South Korea as a member of a consortium that has won a major contract with the U.S. Army.

Under the contract with the Far East District of the U.S. Army Engineer Division, SK Engineering & Construction (SKEC), supported by AMEC and other partners, will provide up to US$14 million in environmental services to the Department of Defense and other U.S. government interests in Korea. The contract period is two years, but there are options for three more years and an additional US$15 million.

Contract services include environmental assessments and impact studies; pollution-prevention planning; natural and cultural resources surveys; air, water, sediment and soil sampling; investigation and cleanup of contaminated sites; testing, removal and replacement of underground storage tanks; and asbestos and lead-based paint abatement.

"The award is significant in that it is one of the first contracts procured with the intent of supporting, from an environmental perspective, the announced relocation of U.S. forces farther south, away from the border with North Korea," said Brian W. Boose, who directs AMEC's services to the U.S. Army. "This will require the investigation and remediation of residual contamination at properties being returned to the South Korean government as part of the relocation, as well as environmental services at retained and expanding installations on the Korean Peninsula."

AMEC's alliance with SKEC is globally significant as well because both SKEC and AMEC are major international players in the oil and gas sector and future opportunities for this team to work together elsewhere are being explored.

AMEC in South Korea
AMEC has a significant presence in South Korea which is an important strategic market for the company. It is the first ever foreign investor to lead a major PPP project, overseeing the finance, design, build, maintenance and operation of the US$1.4 billion (£800 million) Incheon Bridge development, one of the world's longest bridges. In the nuclear market, AMEC, and its partner the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA), recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Korean Power Engineering Company (KOPEC) to win work in the multi-billion pound South Korean nuclear market.
