Scottish & Southern Energy Application to Build Wind Farm on Lewis
Scottish and Southern Energy plc ("SSE") has submitted an application to Scottish Ministers for consent to build a 205MW (megawatt) wind farm at Pairc on Lewis in the Western Isles.
It is the largest wind farm development for which SSE has ever sought consent.
The application features a proposal for 57 turbines over an area of approximately 20 square kilometres and construction of the wind farm would requirement investment by SSE currently estimated at around £200m.
SSE's four operational wind farms have a total installed capacity of 162MW and it has consent for three other wind farm developments with a total installed capacity of 74MW. It also has six other wind farm proposals at various stages in the planning process.
Ian Marchant, Chief Executive of SSE, said:
"The Energy White Paper has confirmed that renewable energy has a key part to play in reducing carbon emissions and contributing to security of supply by diversifying the electricity mix and reducing the need for energy imports. Our application to build a wind farm at Pairc follows five years of environmental and technical studies and discussions with the local community and I am confident that it will receive consent."
