Jacobs Receives Fort Hills Oil Sands Bitumen Production Contract

Jacobs LogoJacobs Engineering Group Inc. have received a contract from Fort Hills Energy L.P. to provide engineering design and procurement services for the Utilities and Off-sites (U&O) component of the bitumen production scope of the Fort Hills project. The mine is located in Alberta's Athabasca oil sands area, approximately 90 kilometers north of Fort McMurray, Canada.

Fort Hills Energy L.P. consists of Petro-Canada with a 55 percent working interest, UTS Energy Corporation with a 30 percent working interest, and Teck Comico with a 15 percent working interest, with Petro-Canada Oil Sands Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Petro-Canada, as the contract operator for the project.

The U&O scope includes key systems such as cogeneration of power and steam, water, utilities, underground systems, and the tank farm. The bitumen production facility will extract the recoverable bitumen found in the area's oil sands deposits.

The work will commence immediately with confirmation of the completed Design Basis Memorandum and associated cost estimate, and will be executed from Jacobs' Calgary, Alberta, office, with support provided by Jacobs' Raleigh, N.C., office for the cogeneration scope of work.

In making the announcement, Jacobs Executive Vice President, Operations, Greg Landry stated, "We are pleased to be selected for such a critical role in the bitumen production scope. Effective management and communication are key success factors for the U&O scope of work. Our proven work processes, successfully implemented on other Petro-Canada projects, facilitate the flow of timely and accurate information. We look forward to providing our integrated, full-service EPC capabilities including value-added services such as self-performing construction work, captive modular fabrication yards, and a large resource base with over 10,000 craft and 20,000 professionals in North America."
