Jacobs to Expand Polymer Plant for Borealis in Sweden

Jacobs LogoJacobs Engineering Group Inc. have received a contract from Borealis to provide detailed engineering to expand a polymer production facility in Stenungsund, Sweden.

The new facility is scheduled for startup in 2008. Jacobs is executing the work from its office in Stenungsund with support from regional resources as needed.

Borealis is a provider of innovative, value-creating plastics solutions for customers in over 170 countries. The expanded facility will enhance Borealis' capability by 20 percent to provide advanced materials for wire and cable applications. Borealis has committed to invest EUR 370 million (US$ 504 million) in Stenungsund for the wire and cable market.

The facility will use a technology licensed from BASF to produce a high grade of low-density polypropylene (LDPE). This complements the additional cross-linkable polyethylene capacity coming on stream at the site during the second half of the year.

Roy Vardheim, General Manager Borealis Scandinavia, said, "It is with pleasure that we have awarded Jacobs, Borealis' partner in engineering, the contract to provide the detailed engineering for our new LDPE production facility in Stenungsund."
