SNC Lavalin Awarded Contract by MATL
SNC-Lavalin's Transmission and Distribution Division has been awarded a CAN $6M contract by Montana Alberta Tie Ltd. (MATL) to design and construct an electrical substation near Lethbridge, Alberta.
The substation is a critical part of MATL's plan for a 347 km long, 300 MW (230 kV) bi-directional transmission line to interconnect the power transmission grids of the province of Alberta and the state of Montana. The line will be the first cross-border merchant transmission line between Canada and the United States. In 2006, MATL awarded SNC-Lavalin T&D the engineering, procurement, and construction contract for the transmission line, and design is underway.
"This substation is another important step in this innovative and challenging project through the heart of the Chinook wind region, and we're pleased to be able to deliver it for MATL," said Cindy Andrew, Senior Vice-President and General Manager of SNC-Lavalin T&D.
The substation will terminate the Alberta portion of the line and tie into the Alberta Interconnected Electrical System (AIES). MATL and the local Transmission Facility Owner will each own a portion of the substation, which will include a phase-shifting transformer to step down Alberta's 240 kV voltage to Montana's 230 kV voltage.
"We look forward to moving ahead with the substation and are pleased to work with SNC-Lavalin T&D as our lead engineer and general contractor," said Johan van't Hof, Chief Executive Officer of Tonbridge Power, which holds a controlling interest in MATL.
The transmission line project and the associated substation are progressing through the regulatory stage and applications have been filed with provincial, state and federal regulators in Canada and the US. Pending regulatory approval, commercial operation is targeted for mid-2008.
