Shaw Selected as EPC Contractor for Solid Fuel Re-Power Project
The Shaw Group has been selected as engineering, procurement and construction services contractor by Entergy Louisiana, LLC, a subsidiary of Entergy Corporation, for its project to re-power the existing Unit 3 at Entergy's Little Gypsy station located near New Orleans, Louisiana.
The re-power project will include replacing an existing natural gas-fired boiler with two new circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boilers which will supply steam to an existing steam turbine generator. Upon completion, Little Gypsy Unit 3's fuel efficient CFB boilers would be capable of using a wide range of fuels, including petroleum coke, which is a high-energy, refinery by-product waste.
The project will also include the engineering and installation of state-of-the-art emissions controls systems, including a selective non-catalytic reduction system (SNCR) and circulating dry flue gas desulfurization system (FGD) to reduce nitrogen oxide and sulfur dioxide emissions, respectively. Shaw will also provide fabricated piping systems and industrial structural steel fabrication from its Sunland pipe facility in Walker, LA and its Shaw SSS Fabricators steel facility in Addis, LA, respectively.
Based on current projections, the new facility is expected to be operational in the 2011 to 2012 timeframe. The total cost of the re-power project is estimated to be approximately $1 billion. The value of Shaw's contract was not disclosed.
J.M. Bernhard, Jr., Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Shaw, said, "We are very pleased to have been selected by Entergy, a fellow Louisiana-based NYSE-listed company, to engineer and construct this re-power project which will generate reliable power in an environmentally sound and cost-effective process. Shaw continues to lead the expanding clean-energy generation market, and as a Louisiana-based company, we are especially pleased to be a partner with Entergy on this significant project in our home state. Shaw already employs over 5,000 professionals and skilled laborers in Louisiana and this project is expected employ over 500 skilled workers at peak during construction."
Entergy Corporation is an integrated energy company engaged primarily in electric power production and retail distribution operations. Entergy owns and operates power plants with approximately 30,000 megawatts of electric generating capacity, and it is the second-largest nuclear generator in the United States. Entergy delivers electricity to 2.6 million utility customers in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. Entergy has annual revenues of more than $10 billion and approximately 14,000 employees.
