Fluor Awarded Contract for Copper-Gold Concentrator
Fluor Corporation will provide project management, engineering and procurement services for a US$598-million (A$775 million) copper-gold project for Oxiana Limited in South Australia.
"This is the first major mining project in the region since the expansion of Olympic Dam in the late '90s," said Dwayne Wilson, president of Fluor's Industrial and Infrastructure business line. "Fluor was involved in the Olympic Dam project, and this is another great project for Fluor in Australia."
Oxiana's Board of Directors formally approved development of the Prominent Hill copper-gold project on Aug. 25, 2006. The copper-gold deposit was discovered in 2001 by Adelaide-based Mintaur Exploration Ltd. and has been the stand-out greenfields discovery of the decade in Australia.
During the expansion, Fluor's construction management organization will require an average of 400 workers with up to 1,000 workers at peak periods. Project work will be executed out of Fluor's offices in Perth and Adelaide, Australia.
The project includes development of an open-pit mine, a conventional grinding and flotation processing plant with an 8 million ton per annum capacity, construction of a permanent village to accommodate a 400-person workforce and construction of a haul road, power lines, airfield and bore field. First commercial production of copper-gold concentrates is slated for third quarter 2008.
Oxiana is an international mining and exploration company focusing on Australia, Asia and the Pacific. Oxiana products include gold, copper cathodes and base and precious metal concentrates.
