Jacobs Receives Contract to Support Design of Fusion Facility

Jacobs LogoJacobs Engineering Group has received a contract to deliver design services to the EC through EFDA (European Fusion Development Agreement) in the frame of the international collaboration for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) facility to be built at Cadarache, near Aix-en-Provence, France.

Officials estimate the value of the project construction costs at euro 4.26 billion. Work on the new facility is planned to begin in the first half of 2007 with completion scheduled for 2015.

A core team will be based in France and Jacobs will perform civil and structural engineering as well as general plant design work from their offices in the U.K. The project, a joint initiative involving the U.S., Russia, China, Japan, South Korea, India, and the European Union, seeks to develop viable technology to generate electricity via fusion. This facility is an experimental facility that shall prove the scientific feasibility of fusion as a viable energy source and a number of the critical technologies, producing up to 500 MW thermal power for extended period of operation.

In making the announcement, Jacobs Group Vice President Phil Stassi stated, "This is an extremely exciting project. Fusion energy has the potential to provide a long-term solution to the problem of global warming and we are privileged to have a role in such an important mission."
