Mott MacDonald Pettit Awarded BELCO Contract

MottMacDonald LogoMott MacDonald Pettit has been awarded a five-year technical services contract by BELCO to provide engineering, management and specialist technical services for the expansion of Bermuda's generating facilities.

This major expansion programme is likely to commence in 2007 and will include planning for the replacement of ageing plant and work towards meeting the island's forecasted increase in demand for electricity up to 2025 and beyond.

The scope of Mott MacDonald Pettit's contract covers the following specific areas:

•   stationary diesel power generation plant
•   gas turbine plant
•   technical support in discussions with IPP developers
•   distributed generation and CHP
•   environmental regulations and control
•   renewable power generation technology
•   regulation, system planning
•   transmission and distribution

Initially, the Mott MacDonald Pettit team will be involved with BELCO in assessing Bermuda's regulatory frameworks and proposing changes in line with anticipated environmental legislation as well as assessing the existing site layout at Pembroke to see how it can be expanded to meet the level of growth and retirement of plant predicted. Using these assessments, the team will also help to develop a masterplan which takes into consideration existing and new fuel, lube oil storage facilities, waste treatment plant and cooling facilities.

Brian Kinsella, Mott MacDonald Pettit's project manager said, "We're delighted to be assisting BELCO on this prestigious project. This is a continuation of the successful relationship that the Group has had with BELCO since the early 1980s. Mott MacDonald is one of the world's leading power consultants with a wealth of expertise across the whole power spectrum. We're looking forward to putting it into practice on this strategic energy project for Bermuda."

Guy Doyle, Mott MacDonald's chief energy economist who is also part of the project team added, "As a world leading centre for tourism and international business, environmental considerations are very important to any future development for the country and we'll be helping BELCO to deliver an energy framework that will be suitable both now and in 2025."
