CB&I to Supply Vessels for Canadian Oil Sands Expansion Project

CB&ICB&I has been awarded a contract by Suncor Energy Services Inc. to engineer and construct process vessels for a proposed expansion of its oil sands upgrading capacity. The award is valued in excess of US$65 million.

CB&I's scope of work for the project includes the detail design, fabrication and on-site assembly of four coke drums and one fractionator column for phase one and two coke drums for phase two. Upon completion in late 2008, the vessels will be erected in a proposed new upgrader near Fort McMurray, Alberta, which will process oil sands into synthetic crude oil. The new coke drums are believed to be the largest delayed coker units in the Western Hemisphere. Suncor's expansion project is subject to approval from regulators and the company's Board of Directors. The proposed expansion is intended to bring Suncor's production capacity to more than half a million barrels per day.

This award builds on CB&I's previous oil sands work for Suncor that spans four decades and includes a number of primary separation vessels for bitumen processing, a large-scale hydrogen production facility, one of the world's largest vacuum distillation towers, previous coke drums and a variety of storage vessels.
