Power Plant Project for Mott MacDonald

MottMacDonald LogoMott MacDonald has been appointed employer's engineer for a 1000MW captive power plant being developed to provide the power requirements of Sohar Aluminium's new smelter project, following a competitive bidding process. The approximately £250 million facility is set to be the biggest greenfield power generation project to be built in the Sultanate and will be located at the Sohar industrial port.

Sohar Aluminium – which is owned 40% by Oman Oil Company, 40% by ADWEA and 20% by Alcan – is developing an integrated project for a primary aluminium smelter, which will produce 350,000 tonnes of aluminium per year from a single potline on completion of the first phase of the project.

The power plant will comprise 4x Alstom 13E2 gas turbines in two combined cycle modules. Sea water cooling will be used for the steam turbine condensers. The power plant capacity is rated to supply power to two different locations and voltage levels, 220kV at the smelter which is 12km inland from the port, and 11kV at the port unloading facilities. The power generation plant and associated facilities will be implemented by Alstom under a lump sum turnkey EPC contract which is in place.

Mott MacDonald is providing complete project management and engineering services for the entire project implementation period from contract award to handover of the plant – including the defects liability period – in July 2008. Mott MacDonald also undertook feasibility studies, prepared tender documentation and assisted with tender evaluation and award of the EPC contact.
