North West Upgrading Contract for Jacobs

Jacobs LogoJacobs Engineering Group's Canadian subsidiary company has received a contract from North West Upgrading Inc. to prepare a process design package for a sulphur recovery unit (SRU) at North West Upgrading's proposed upgrader. The Upgrader is located in Sturgeon County, just north of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. This area is referred to as Alberta's Industrial Heartland due to its concentration of heavy petrochemical business.

The process design package applies Jacobs' proprietary SUPERCLAUS(R) and Shell Liquid Sulphur Degassing technologies, achieving a minimum sulphur recovery of 98.8 percent. The SUPERCLAUS(R) unit produces molten elemental sulphur by oxidizing acid gas feed streams (H2S and CO2) from various high- and low-pressure sources. Installing the 362-tons-per-day SRU allows North West Upgrading to meet its environmental commitments for the first phase of its three phase project where it will ultimately process 150,000 bpd of bitumen.

North West Upgrading President and CEO Rob Pearce stated, "This is a very exciting time for North West Upgrading as we are about to bring our vision to life. By partnering with highly regarded organizations like Jacobs, we are even more confident in our processes and our future success."

In making the announcement, Jacobs Group Vice President Greg Landry stated, "We're pleased to support North West Upgrading by sharing the expertise we've gained from designing and building over 250 plants around the globe. In addition to this project, we are currently developing over 30 projects worldwide through our Comprimo(R) Sulphur Solutions Group. We have the dominant market share for sulphur work in the world, with the projects we have delivered representing a total recovery of over 25,000 tons of sulphur per day."

North West Upgrading is an organization that is committed to building an independent, heavy oil upgrader in Alberta's Industrial Heartland. The upgrader will play a key role in maximizing the value of Alberta's rapidly increasing bitumen production. Please visit www.northwestupgrading.com for more information.
