Eni and Çalik Plan Development of Turkish Straits By-pass Route

Eni and Çalik have reached an agreement laying the basis for the development of an oil pipeline connecting the Turkish Port of Samsun, on the Black Sea, with Ceyhan, on Turkey's Mediterranean coast.

The purpose of the project is to provide a faster, environmentally safer and more economic alternative to the transportation of oil by ship through the Turkish Straits of the Bosphorus and Dardanelles.

The Turkish Government is aware of the initiative undertaken by the Eni-Çalik consortium, and has indicated its support to the Samsun-Ceyhan route.

Eni and Calik will perform engineering and design studies on both the selected route and the transportation system, which, in addition to the 560 km pipeline, includes a new loading terminal in Samsun and oil storage facilities to be built in Ceyhan.

The system's transportation capacity will exceed 1 million barrels of oil per day. The project is of strategic importance for Eni, operator of the giant Kashagan field and co-operator of the Karachaganak field in Kazakhstan.

"We conceived this project" – declared Chief Operating Officer of Eni Exploration & Production Division, Mr. Stefano Cao – "to export the crude oil production which will increasingly flow from Kazakhstan and Russia to the Black Sea. In cooperation with Çalik, one of Turkey's most prominent industrial private conglomerates, we will build a strategic transportation infrastructure towards the international oil markets, which will also ease the traffic of oil carriers through the congested Turkish Straits, thus minimizing environmental hazards".
