New Research and Demonstration Centre for Statoil
Plans for a Norwegian hydrogen research and demonstration centre
in Trondheim have been drawn up by power generator Statkraft, oil company Statoil and classification society Det Norske Veritas.
Representing a powerful alliance with strong specialist teams, these partners aim to develop environment-friendly, profitable and safe solutions for hydrogen production. The gas will be used for vehicle fuel and in combined heat and power stations.
With a cost framework of NOK 55 million, the aim is to have the Hydrogen Technology Research Centre (Hytrec) ready in early 2007 providing all the formal decisions fall into place. It will represent an important contribution in a national Norwegian commitment to laying the groundwork for a future hydrogen market.
The intention is to establish Hytrec at Tyholt in Trondheim where work on the production and utilisation of hydrogen can be combined. In addition to research facilities, it will embrace a visitor centre and practical demonstrations of using the gas in the transport sector and for generating electricity and heat.
Hytrec is being located in Trondheim because this mid-Norwegian city has Norway's strongest technological research and educational community. All three of the partners are also represented there with offices and/or research facilities.
Hydrogen produced from environment-friendly energy is expected to play an important role as an energy bearer in the future. As a fuel, its local emissions are confined to water. The gas can be produced by chemical conversion of natural gas or from water with the aid of electricity. When natural gas is used with carbon dioxide capture and storage and electricity comes from renewable sources, hydrogen can be obtained without emitting greenhouse gases or other environmentally-harmful fumes.
The combined expertise of the three partners is expected to provide synergies for developing new and innovative technology in the hydrogen area. These companies will contribute leading-edge expertise to the project, with Statkraft developing solutions for cost-effective hydrogen production using renewable energy.
Statoil will concentrate on new technology for producing hydrogen from natural gas in combination with carbon dioxide capture and storage. Det Norske Veritas will primarily develop secure technology and services for safety, qualification and certification on the basis of activities at Hytrec.
