Arctic Systems Case Delay Causes Anxiety
The presiding judge, Justice Park, in the appeal-case between Arctic Systems and the Inland Revenue on Section 660A has delayed his verdict until the 6 May (the day after the general election, is this purely a coincidence one must ask?). It is causing hundreds of thousands of family-run businesses anxiety whilst they wait to discover whether they face huge retrospective tax bills following this landmark case.
The delay can only promote the uncertainty surrounding this archaic legislation.
It has been expressed by Neil Hamper, head of the taxation and financial affairs committee at the Federation of Small Businesses, that the delay could be a potential vote loser for the Government. "There are around 6,000 small businesses in each parliamentary constituency and this could be a turn-off for voters", he said. "Most businesses aren’t interested in the intricacies of S660A. What we really want is certainty and to put the issue behind us".
