Shell Hiring 1000 Engineers
Shell is to hire over 1,000 engineers to reinforce its exploration and production operations. This news was published by The Financial Times on its website, stating the news had been included in an internal newsletter communication.
The increase in staff is to assist Shell to close the gap with rivals, which have left the company behind in gaining access to commercially exploitable oil and gas reserves, and restore credibility to its own reserves booking system. Royal Dutch/Shell cut its proven oil reserves estimate last year, and the report said the hiring move suggests that the group's troubles with inflated reserves may involve technical failings.
Citing analysts, the report said experienced engineers will be hard to find, with exployees of the other oil majors possibly reluctant to move to Shell because of its recent problems.
Within the 1000 hires, Shell plans to employ 170 experienced petroleum engineers by April on a contract or permanent basis, the report stated. Shell was quoted as saying that the new hires represent normal recruitment, but also reflect increases in capital spending in the next few years
