Wood Group Awarded $10 million Shell Contract

Wood GroupWood Group Production Technology has been awarded a $10 million contract by Shell Exploration and Production Company to provide endurable permanent downhole sensors for its subsea well installations in the Gulf of Mexico.

Since 1993 WGPT has installed more than 100 permanent downhole sensors for Shell in the Gulf of Mexico, mainly in deepwater subsea wells. When Tahoe and Popeye, the first wells with the sensors, were worked over after seven and 10 years respectively, the sensors were still providing pressure and temperature data upon retrieval. Fifth-generation technology, the 25,000 psi quartz-based ROC™ downhole sensor, was installed at gauge setting depths of more than 20,000 feet for Shell's Princess field.

“Reliability of downhole equipment is critical for efficient, and profitable, field operations, particularly in deepwater, and WGPT's permanent downhole sensors have enabled our clients to accumulate data vital for reservoir analysis and production optimization,” said David Blacklaw, general manager of Wood Group Production Technology. “We are pleased that Shell has chosen to continue using our highly reliable downhole monitoring systems.”

Wood Group Production Technology has installed more than 600 permanent downhole sensor systems worldwide, more than half of which are subsea.
