CB&I Awarded Lump-sum Turnkey Contract

CB&I CB&I has been awarded a lump-sum turnkey contract valued at approximately $80m for a liquefied natural gas peak shaving project in Waterbury, Conn. The facility will be owned and operated by Yankee Gas Services Company, a subsidiary of Northeast Utilities. The facility is designed to provide natural gas service during peak usage periods to residential, commercial and industrial customers of Yankee Gas in Connecticut.

CB&I's work scope includes the engineering, procurement and construction of a 6 million standard cubic feet per day liquefaction system, a full containment LNG storage tank with a capacity of 348,000 barrels (1.2 billion cubic feet gas equivalent) and regasification capacity of 60 MMSCFD. Services provided by CB&I will include the design and installation of the plant feed gas pretreatment system, liquefaction and regasification systems, storage tank, and all related plant structures and systems necessary to complete the turnkey facility.

CB&I pioneered the full containment design in the early 1960s and has extensive international experience with this concept. The tank for Yankee Gas will be a full containment LNG storage tank, consisting of a freestanding inner tank constructed of 9% nickel steel and an outer tank shell and roof constructed of reinforced concrete. The facility is scheduled to be placed into service for the 2007/2008 winter heating season.
