Hydro Plant Approved for Loch Ness

Approval has been given for an £85m power station at Loch Ness by Scotland's Highland Council. Up to 400 jobs are expected to be created during construction.

The installed capacity will be between 50MW and 100MW, producing 150 million units of green electricity in a year of average rainfall. The station will use water from a new reservoir above Loch Ness, both directly and via 17km of underground aqueducts and is likely to be built uderground.

Southern Energy aim to develop and construct the plant, which will be the first large scale hydro-electric station to be built in the UK for four decades.

The scheme could generate electricity as early as 2008.
